Tora Dojo: A Charitable Martial Arts Organization
Tora Dojo is a non-profit organization with a clear mission: to provide high-quality martial arts training to students who cannot afford commercial schools. More than just a place to learn self-defense, Tora Dojo aims to build character by fostering self-control, physical fitness, motivation, discipline, and confidence in each student.
Our Core Values:
Accessible Martial Arts: We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to train in martial arts, regardless of their financial situation.
Personal Growth: Our training goes beyond physical skills to promote self-control and well-being.
Community Building: We are dedicated to supporting our community and building a better future by teaching the next generation valuable life skills.
Following a Generous Example: The instructor of Tora Dojo was once offered free instruction by his Sensei when he could not afford it, and he is committed to paying that forward by teaching without charging students.
How Tora Dojo Gives Back:
Free Classes: Tora Dojo provides free karate and self-defense classes to adults, and the instructor has never charged a student in over 30 years of teaching.
Student Support: The dojo covers all expenses for its students, including uniforms (Gi's), jackets, and t-shirts.
Community Engagement: Tora Dojo actively supports the local community by participating in fundraising events like Bid 4 Boquete + (B4B+).
B4B+ Support: Tora Dojo contributes to the B4B+ fundraiser by donating gift certificates, and is responsible for security at the B4B+ events.
A Rich History in Martial Arts:
Tora Dojo's instructor began his martial arts journey in 1972 and has trained in various disciplines, including Kodukan Judo, Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do, Goju Ryu, and Hakkoryu Jujitsu.
The instructor has trained with many Senseis and in many styles of martial arts over the years.
The dojo’s lineage is in Nippon Shorin Ryu, a style that can be traced back to Okinawa’s early martial arts.
The instructor was tasked by his Sensei to document his teachings, passing along his knowledge to future generations.
Training at Tora Dojo:
We teach Nippon Shorin Ryu, a traditional Okinawan style of karate.
We also teach Kobudo (Okinawan weapons) and katas from the Isshin-Ryu system.
The instructor believes in small class sizes to ensure high-quality, personalized instruction.
Classes are taught by an instructor with over 30 years of experience.
Aikido instruction is provided by Sensei Vega, who visits once a month.
The dojo was established in Boquete after 2016 and has been training students since 2013.
A joint tournament was held with Valdessa Shotokan in May 2024.
